Asherman’s Syndrome

Asherman’s Syndrome is most commonly caused by trauma to the uterine lining, particularly after procedures such as dilation and curettage (D&C) following miscarriage, childbirth, or retained placenta. It can also result from uterine surgeries like fibroid removal, infections such as tuberculosis or severe endometritis, or, more rarely, radiation or other intrauterine interventions.

These injuries lead to scar tissue formation, which can affect menstrual function and fertility.

Asherman’s Syndrome is typically treated with hysteroscopic surgery to carefully remove scar tissue and restore the normal shape of the uterine cavity. After surgery, hormone therapy or temporary devices may be used to support healing and prevent adhesions from reforming.
