IVF involves stimulating the ovaries to produce eggs, retrieving and fertilising them in the lab, then transferring a resulting embryo to the uterus, with options such as ICSI and genetic testing depending on individual needs.

People may need IVF when other fertility treatments have not been successful or when factors such as blocked tubes, severe sperm issues, advanced reproductive age, or certain genetic conditions make natural conception unlikely.

Same-sex couples have several fertility options depending on their reproductive goals.

Female couples may use donor sperm with intrauterine insemination (IUI), or IVF, and can also consider reciprocal IVF, where one partner provides the eggs and the other carries the pregnancy.

Male couples typically use IVF with an egg donor and a gestational carrier, with the option for each partner to contribute sperm if they wish.
